Field Notes in the Vortex is made in conversation with the wide open terrain of the High Desert of Southern California, documenting the evolution of my connection to the land and my process of meeting kin. My field notes are insights into the metaphysical, as the body surrenders and portals open as time and space shift and bend; stories about intimate encounters with desert earth spirits; and rituals I've cultivated as a child of diaspora that have guided me towards a deeper sense of belonging with the land.
I have been collecting field notes for this project during my residencies at High Desert Test Sites at A-Z West and Jackrabbit Studios, and it is currently being produced while in residence at Kala Art Institute.
